Text to Speech is a pretty good application. It also for a program to have a universal translator, like that of BabbleFish to take text written and convert it to speech. If voice XML, SIP, the Java Speech API can be combined, it would work with existing PCs to create the famed: Universal Translators.
An even stronger case can be made that the normal home telephone based on the PBX system and cell phones to an even greater extent could be replaced with WI-FI and all phone calls can be made on PDA type devices instead of traditional cell phones. PDA's allows easy video to be sent rather then wait for the upgrade of the home telephone. With an added translator where you call someone in another country and the do not understan becomes easier with first being able to form a rudimentary conversations where both sides can get a rudimentary understanding of a conversation.
